Overcoming Fear & Anxiety: Trusting God in Every Storm
Key Verse
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Key Passage: Matthew 14:22-33 (Jesus Walks on Water)
Picture this: The disciples are out on a boat, minding their own business, when suddenly, a storm crashes in like an uninvited guest. The waves are relentless, the wind is howling, and then—bam!—they see a figure walking on the water. Their first thought? It’s a ghost! (I mean, I’d be thinking the same thing.)
But it’s Jesus. He calls out to them, and Peter—bold, sometimes impulsive Peter—says, “Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come to You on the water.” And Jesus, in His calm and powerful way, simply says, “Come.”
Peter steps out of the boat, and for a moment, he’s walking on water! But then—fear creeps in. He sees the wind, the waves, the chaos around him. He takes his eyes off Jesus, and down he goes. Yet, before he fully sinks, Jesus immediately reaches out and pulls him up.
Does this sound familiar? How often do we start out strong in faith, stepping boldly into God’s calling, believing that He will guide us every step of the way? Yet, as soon as life hits us with storms—whether it’s anxiety, fear, or overwhelming circumstances—we begin to waver. The confidence we once had starts to fade, and suddenly, we feel like we’re sinking, much like Peter when he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the raging waves.
In these moments, the question arises: How do we fully trust God when everything around us feels uncertain? Trusting God is more than just a declaration—it’s an active choice to surrender our fears, lean on His promises, and anchor our faith in His unwavering love. It means shifting our focus from the storm to the One who calms it, reminding ourselves that He is always in control, even when we feel out of control.
When doubt creeps in, we must turn to His Word, meditate on His faithfulness, and pray for the strength to stand firm. By doing so, we cultivate a deep, unshakable trust that allows us to walk through life’s storms with peace, knowing that God is holding us up, even when we feel like we’re sinking.
Faith Over Fear
Trusting Jesus to Calm the Storms of Anxiety
Let’s be honest: Fear is sneaky. It whispers what-ifs and worst-case scenarios into our ears. Anxiety grips our hearts, making us feel like we’re drowning in an ocean of uncertainty. But here’s the good news—just like Peter, we have a Savior who reaches out immediately when we cry out for help.
Jesus didn’t hesitate. He didn’t stand there, arms crossed, saying, “Well, Peter, you should have had more faith.” No, He grabbed Peter’s hand and lifted him up. And He’ll do the same for you.
Fear makes us focus on the storm. Faith helps us focus on the Savior.
When fear and anxiety knock at your door, you have two choices:
- Let them in, set the table, and entertain them like unwanted guests.
- Open the Word, remind yourself of God’s promises, and trust that Jesus is bigger than the storm.
Fear thrives on the unknown, feeding off our doubts, uncertainties, and the “what-ifs” that flood our minds. It whispers lies, making us feel unsteady and out of control. But faith, on the other hand, stands on the unshakable truth of God’s Word. While fear shifts with our circumstances, faith remains firm because it is rooted in the promises of a never-changing God.
When we keep our eyes on Jesus, we can rise above the waves instead of being consumed by them. Just as Peter walked on water when his focus was on Christ, we, too, can move forward in peace when we trust in God’s presence rather than the storm around us. But how do we redirect our thoughts and strengthen our faith when fear creeps in?

Prayer
Lord, You know how easily fear creeps into my heart. But today, I choose to trust You. I choose to fix my eyes on You, not on the storms around me. When anxiety tries to pull me under, remind me that You are my peace, my strength, and my rescue. I surrender my worries to You. In the name of Jesus, amen.
